It helps me understand and process my emotions by expressing what I feel through pictures, sketches, sculptures, and paintings. Each piece often reflects emotions that I struggle to put into words, especially darker feelings, and translates them into abstract forms. The process I have for creating different mediums of art provides an outlet for hidden thoughts, giving them shape through subtle and layered expressions. My photography focuses on capturing moments and the transformative process of turning two-dimensional images into sculptural pieces. I enjoy the challenge of giving physical form to a photo, which has led me to experiment with string and yarn as connection mediums. My project captures people in moments of solitude, isolated in crowded spaces, or at peace with being alone. I plan to connect these photos with red string, forming a sculptural piece that invites viewers to explore the multiple meanings derived from the images. Collaboration is not just a part of my process but a central element that shapes my work. It takes on new depths and meanings as I collaborate with others to help create these intricate expressions. As I work toward my thesis exhibition, I aim for my audience to not just connect with the emotional depth and complexity behind each piece, but to feel included in the creative process.
My Background
Since she was young, Sara has deeply understood how powerful visual communication can convey emotions. Growing up amidst uncertain and challenging times, she turned to drawing and painting to make sense of her feelings. She dabbled in different art forms in her teenage years, but it wasn't until after her first year of college that she discovered her passion for photography. Her practice has expanded as she actively engages with the dynamics of human interaction in crowded environments/spaces. She recognized how people can feel alone or find deep peace within a crowded room. This observation became the driving force of her work, allowing her to capture those raw, fleeting moments of connection and disconnection that truly define what it means to understand complex emotions. Her photographs evolved to incorporate mixed media, using elements like string and yarn to speak to emotions like depression, trauma, and addiction—emotions often veiled beneath the surface. Sara is pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at the University of Memphis. This journey has allowed her to dive deep into the art of capturing emotional stories through her images. She believes working with others brings new perspectives that enrich her art and help her see things differently. Her art encourages viewers to explore the complex emotions that define our humanity and thoughts. Sara's mission is to inspire reflection and awareness of the connections and risks in our relationships with ourselves and others.
